{"id":36,"date":"2025-12-17T21:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-17T20:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ilenda.mojweb.com.hr\/?p=36"},"modified":"2026-01-14T18:31:36","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T17:31:36","slug":"cheap-but-powerful-earth-colours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ilenda.mojweb.com.hr\/index.php\/2025\/12\/17\/cheap-but-powerful-earth-colours\/","title":{"rendered":"Cheap But Powerful; Earth Colours"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Green Earth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Green earth<\/strong>, also known as&nbsp;<strong>terre verte<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Verona green<\/strong>, is an inorganic&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pigment\">pigment<\/a>&nbsp;derived from the minerals&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Celadonite\">celadonite<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Glauconite\">glauconite<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Green_earth#cite_note-2\">[2]<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Green_earth#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Green_earth#cite_note-StClair-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Its chemical formula is&nbsp;K[(Al,Fe<sup>3+<\/sup>),(Fe<sup>2+<\/sup>,Mg)](AlSi<sub>3<\/sub>,Si<sub>4<\/sub>)O<sub>10<\/sub>(OH)<sub>2<\/sub>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Green_earth#cite_note-a-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-accent-5-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0a7680ddb7d5ddf1493ac0d2aec9628c wp-block-paragraph\">First used by the ancient Romans, green earth has been identified on wall paintings at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pompeii\">Pompeii<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dura-Europos\">Dura-Europos<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Green_earth#cite_note-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup><sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Green_earth#cite_note-b-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;The Renaissance painter and writer&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cennino_Cennini\">Cennino Cennini<\/a>&nbsp;claimed that \u201cthe ancients never&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gilded\">gilded<\/a>&nbsp;except with this green\u201d being used as a bole, or undercoating. In the Middle Ages one of its best-known uses was in the underpainting of flesh tones.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Green_earth#cite_note-a-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Green earths have been rather confusingly referred to as &#8220;verda terra&#8221; In its natural state, it is yellowish brown, and it is called&nbsp;<strong>raw sienna<\/strong>. When heated, it becomes a reddish brown, and it is called&nbsp;<strong>burnt sienna<\/strong>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sienna#cite_note-Shorter_OED-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;It takes its name from the city-state of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Republic_of_Siena\">Siena<\/a>, where it was produced during the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Renaissance\">Renaissance<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sienna#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Along with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ochre\">ochre<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Umber\">umber<\/a>, it was one of the first pigments to be used by humans, and is found in many&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cave_painting\">cave paintings<\/a>. In the case of sienna, the most prevalent iron oxides are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Limonite\">limonite<\/a>&nbsp;(which in its natural state has a yellowish color), and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Goethite\">goethite<\/a>. In addition to iron oxides, natural or raw sienna is also composed of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manganese_oxide\">manganese oxide<\/a>, which makes it darker than ochre.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aluminium_oxides\">Aluminum oxides<\/a>&nbsp;have also been found in the soil at very low levels.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sienna#cite_note-Helwig-2007-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;When heated, the limonite and goethite is dehydrated and turns partially to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hematite\">hematite<\/a>, which gives it a reddish-brown color.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sienna#cite_note-7\">[7]<\/a><\/sup>&nbsp;Sienna is lighter in shade than raw umber, which is also clay with iron oxide, but which has a significantly higher content of manganese (5 to 20 percent) making it greenish brown or dark brown in color.
